CHAPTER 14
Even after Abby had dropped Jane off at home, Jane couldnât stop thinking about the pictures the woman at the bakery had passed to Abby. Jane had told Abby sheâd hold onto them for her since they might be useful in finding out what was going on. Abby seemed more than happy not to have to look at them again.
The kids had plans that Sunday afternoon, Libby was going to a friend's birthday party and Tyson was going to spend the day with his friends. So Jane found herself alone and wondering about the woman in the photos. Had she led her friend wrong when she said it looked as though it was nothing? She sat down and stared at each of the photos as if theyâd show her something she hadnât noticed before.
Finally, Jane stood up and went to find her keys. The coffee shop known as Super Brew wasnât that far away. She could get there and see if anyone remembered seeing them before the kids would even begin thinking about coming home. Besides, it wasnât like she had any other plans. Resolved to her decision, she grabbed her things and headed to her car.
The drive felt as though it took forever as she headed back into the city. Now that it was later in the day, the traffic had picked up a bit and she had to be more alert. That helped distract her for a while, but she still wondered why Dante had been out with another woman.
And, oddly enough, she found herself wondering if the other man in the one photo might have been Evan. It was hard to tell and there were lots of people who had his color of hair, so why did she keep thinking that when she looked at the photo?
Jane smirked to herself. She knew why. Because she didnât trust him. She knew Evan was up to something, and she just assumed that he was in with Dante, another man who seemed to be up to something. Why not lump them together in her mind? It made perfect sense.
It was a normal thing for the human brain to want to classify things. To put them into groups in order to sort them. Clearly, sheâd put Dante and Evan in the same group together, even if she didnât fully understand why.
Super Brew was one of those trendy coffee houses that normally would be gone in a year or two, but this one had made its mark with the unique drinks they made. Nothing was just a plain coffee.
There were names and special blends that were unique to the location and the few times sheâd been, sheâd had some sort of cinnamon coffee with a caramel drizzle that had been so rich and so decadent that it should have been a dessert.
Jane planned to order one again, but she made a mental note that she might want to take a long walk that evening to burn off all the extra calories sheâd be consuming.
